PressProgress is at the centre of what could be one of the biggest, longest and most expensive media trials in recent Canadian history. A former star candidate for Jason Kenney’s United Conservative Party has launched a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against PressProgress and other trusted news organizations. This case has serious implications for freedom of the press and democracy in Canada.

This lawsuit may cost us a million dollars, even if we win.

If we back down, we will send the message that groundless defamation lawsuits work, and it will make it easier for rich and powerful people to weaponize the law to silence journalists, civil society groups and anyone else who criticizes them.
